Funeral

Funerals are done all different ways. When Carol's Dad died in 1984 Carol and her brother decided that they would not open the casket. Their aunt Marie insisted that she be able to view her brother's body, so she did. Carol's brother said that she could carry his body off on her back if she wanted to! Well, she didn't, and there were a lot of hard feelings in that family, so a statement like that was not out of the ordinary. Some have cremation after the body viewing and funeral. Some have immediate cremation. The funeral we attended was of a fellow minister that we all knew for many years. Their families grew up in this valley below us, and he was very close to my brother's age, so they knew each other well. They did something different for him than most. They had his body viewing on Monday, and we did not make a trip to town for that. Tuesday morning they had a short grave side service, mainly for the family. Then they had a memorial service for him in his own church that he and his congregation built, as he was the pastor of that church for about 35 years before he retired a few years ago. He got so that he could not see, so he resigned from pastoring the church. Then he got into a car wreck, and he mostly recovered from that, although he could not get around very well after that. Then he got stomach cancer, and died just a few days ago. It was all kind of sad, but he knew the Lord and he is with the Lord now, so he is much better off!

Carol and I debated whether or not to go to the funeral dinner, but after the service we decided to, as there was really good food, but also many of our friends were there, and we were able to visit with them. An amazing thing happened there was a dark chocolate pie on the desert table, and no one was eating it. Maybe they didn't like dark chocolate, I don't know? I took one piece with all my other food, as they say, "Life is uncertain, so eat desert first!" Anyway when I finished my food no one was eating that chocolate pie, so I had a second piece. Then after I ate that, I didn't want whoever made that pie to get their feelings hurt thinking no one liked their chocolate pie, so I had a third piece. I was full of dark chocolate pie, and I was very satisfied!

On the way home we stopped at a little cemetary out of this town to look for Carol's great uncle Jim, or his grave anyway. They had a list of names and a map showing where everone was buried. We found the place where he is supposed to be buried, but no markers, stones, or any identification for him. Carol thought that her grandfather, her Dad's Dad was buried there also which was her great uncle's brother. We found on the map where it said there was a baby buried with his same name, and Carol is wondering if that is a mistake, because she didn't think there was a baby buried with his exact name. The other strange thing is that where it said this baby was buried there was a man bruied who had the same last name as her grandfather's second wife's last name! We know that Carol's great uncle Jim is there, because we found his grave years ago. We think her grandfather is there, but we could not find him.
