Internet in The Philippines

Postby jadegil6 » Tue May 19, 2015 5:15 pm

Since there are often questions or concerns about internet connections in the Philippines I thought some members may be interested in an article from GMA news from today.

Basically the article states that The Philippines has the second slowest internet download speeds of the 22 Asian countries surveyed, at an average speed of 3.64 Mbps. The only country with slower speeds is Afghanistan with 2.52 Mbps.

The article goes on to state that the Philippines also has some of the most expensive internet service in the world at an average price of $ 18.19 per Mbps compared to the worldwide average of $ 5.21 per Mbps. This places the Philippines at number 161 of 202 countries surveyed.

The above results were compiled by Ookla Speedtest during the period April 18th to May 17th, 2015.

The fastest internet speed of the 22 Asian countries surveyed was Singapore at 122.43 Mbps.

Don't forget that these are "average" speeds and are subject to location, provider and luck. A friend has Globe LTE connection with an outside antenna, and he may reach the average Philippine Mbps speed before 8:00am. Later in the day his speed may drop to 1.00 Mbps or slower depending on how many people are using the service.

yes sir thats right, when your going to mall and get some free wifi and i can say you shouldn't try coz its waste of time the internet its very slow and many people using it. and if your prepaid like Globe you have to load 50pesos and register in internet only for 1 day, and if you are post paid promo is 1,299pesos for 3mbps and a telephone.

So what is the best options for someone that needs a reliable signal?
Surely there are different service providers that compete for business.

I don't know if there is any good, reliable internet service in the Philippines. I bought both the Globe tatoo and Smart wifi devices to use on my laptop, and neither one was reliable. They might work at 6 AM, but then not work at all the rest of the day. I usually went to an internet cafe when I wanted o check emails, etc. But those were no where near as fast as the speeds I was used to in Texas.

This may answer your question. I hope Michael allows the link. I am using my tablet and it is too difficult to select the text, there is a lot of text. Basically if I have understood it correctly PLDT have a monopoly of a key bit of infrastructure and no interest in upgrading it or following international practice.

I believe you can get a good speed in Metro Manila. Otherwise it is a case of selecting the best option for your particular part of the country. What works best in one place may not work only a couple of miles away.

"compete". that cracked me up.

Chas,
Members will need to copy and paste your url into their browsers to view the article because urls are disallowed for the forum due to past problems with people abusing them. I hope you will understand. Thanks!

I think you are right about how you explained the location and what company works best for that location as being a determinate of whether one gets good service or not. I guess it is best to talk to the locals where one is to find out what company is best for that area.

Yeah Right, if you want free internet some of network has free data like smart and globe. But if you want high speed internet you have to pay high price to gain access fast internet. Some of places also offer free wifi like coffee shops and kios in malls. I hope one day the internet would be free to all :)
