As tensions with China have grown, the US and the Philippines have moved to increase co-operation. Recently, Washington and Manila signed a deal allowing US troops better access to military bases, ports and airfields. The US and Philippine military have joined forces in training drills which focus on maritime capabilities. They include live-fire and maritime surveillance exercises These exercises come amid reports China has sent more ships to an area disputed with the Philippines. Spokespersons for the Philippines state that the exercises are aimed at improving "tactical-level military proficiency" and enhancing US-Filipino co-operation. The military exercise would also focus on humanitarian assistance and disaster response. Military personnel from both countries will offer free medical, dental and veterinary care in Legazpi City, and build and repair infrastructure such as schools in Bicol.
Over the past few days, Philippine media reported the sighting of more Chinese vessels near Second Thomas Shoal, as the Philippine military air-dropped provisions to its troops stationed on a rusting vessel beached there. US President Barack Obama pledged "ironclad" backing for the Philippines, which is engaged in a maritime dispute with China since the two countries have competing claims over a number of islands and shoals in the South China Sea, such as Second Thomas Shoal and Scarborough Shoal. The Philippines has asked a United Nations arbitration tribunal to rule on this issue.

As can be seen in this illustration, China is claiming ownership of a massive area of the seas that border the Philippines and Vietnam.

There are increasing tensions in Vietnam over China's claim to the areas depicted in the above illustration. There are demonstrations in Vietnam's two largest cities, and China has evacuated over 3,000 of it's citizens from Vietnam over this weekend. The protests involved other foreigner owned factories in Vietnam, and have resulted in the burning of at least 15 factories owned by investors from China, Taiwan and South Korea. The problems have been set off because China has moved it's first deep sea drilling platform to an area near the Paracel Islands which are off the coast of Vietnam, and which are claimed by the Vietnamese as their territory. Vietnam has accused China of massing 80 vessels, including navy ships, to back an operation to drill for oil off the disputed Paracel islands. It released video footage to back its claim that Chinese ships had rammed Vietnamese vessels.
The US has called for restraint amid fears of possible clashes.
A foreign ministry official in Beijing said the Vietnamese patrol ships had collided deliberately. He said the drilling operation was taking place in Chinese territory and Beijing had acted with the utmost restraint. Vietnam rushed vessels to the area off its central coast after Beijing announced it was sending a drill ship to prospect for oil on 1 May.
Vietnam has plans for oil exploration of its own in the region, which it claims falls under Vietnamese sovereignty. The Paracel Islands have been controlled by China since it extended its control over the entire island group in a military operation in 1974. Analysts say there is concern that China is testing the resolve of Vietnam, and the United States, following President Barack Obama's recent visit to the region.
Daniel Russel, the US assistant secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific, who is in Hanoi, urged both sides not to take unilateral action. He warned that the confrontation could lead to conflict that would damage the regional and world economies.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters on Thursday that Japan - which is also involved in a territorial dispute with Beijing over East China Sea islands - was "strongly concerned about heightened tensions in the region due to China's illegal exploration". "We urge [China] to refrain from taking unilateral actions that would escalate the tensions, and exercise restraint in accordance with international law," Mr Suga said, according to the Japanese news agency Kyodo.

As can be seen in the above illustration, China claims a U-shaped swathe in the South China Sea that overlaps areas claimed by several of its neighbors, including Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines. The Philippines is currently taking China to the UN court over maritime territorial disputes.
Last Wednesday, Philippine police seized a Chinese fishing boat and detained its 11 member crew in another disputed part of the South China Sea, prompting a protest from China. China has called for the immediate release of the fishermen and their boat. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying warned the Philippines to "make rational explanations" and "take no more provocative action". She added that a Chinese maritime police boat had arrived in the area.
The Philippines said the fishermen would be investigated to see if they broke the law, including one on endangered species. Several hundred turtles were reportedly found in their boat. National Police Chief Alan Purisima told media the fishermen's arrest was made in Philippine territory. But as we can see, China claims ownership of all of the seas west of the Philippines.

The news over the past 48 hours is that Vietnam has joined with the Philippines to work together to oppose China's aggression. Maybe some of the other countries with interests in the South China Seas will also stand alongside of this growing coalition. The United States recently reiterated it's support of the people of the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.

I would think that the 500 Billion dollar deal .. That the Russian's and Chinese have Made should keep China in Propane for a few years . I am glad to Hear that Vietnam agree's with the Philippines . I also agree with You if another country joined in then China Might take everything Much More Carefully .

There are forces that drive men to do what they do, and two of the strongest are power and greed. That seems to be at the center of China's leader's minds. :(
