When we moved to Stehekin about 12 years ago we got used to not have a phone as there is no cell phone service there. No one there had a land line telephone, but there was one satellite telephone for community use. It was wait in line, then when it is your turn don't talk only a few minutes, then get off and let the next person on the phone. We lived there several years with those conditions, then the technology came through so that people in the Stehekin Valley could have satellite internet service. We were about six months behind a lot of other people getting the internet, but there were people slower than us getting it too. The internet was expensive, but not as much as many of our telepone bills were before we moved. The internet was our communication, get on and chat with our family and friends from where we moved from. We got accustomed to not having a phone, so when we moved here we didn't get a land line phone again. Our kids have one, and we use it once in a while. Between our kids and us we are on a family plan with a cell phone that people call us on, and we call them. My wife, Carol, bought a cell phone for our youngest granddaughter, and she pays for texting only for two of our grandkids living with us because of our youngest daughter's marriage troubles. The kids love to text, and the plan she pays for once a month is for unlimited texting. The older one of the two is 17 years old and she has a wonderful Christian boy friend that she texts with constantly, and I think it is great for her to have that encouragement from someone who is a wonderful God fearing person who is in her age range. We have cell phone reception in our house, but there is not phone reception between here and the paved road, which is about 10 or 12 miles away. It works great for us, and we carry it with us to town or where ever else we travel.

We have been given 3 cell phones. One was a loan from our kids, and the other 2 were given to us from the other twin daughter. She is on a plan where they give her a new cell phone every so often, and she gives us her old phone, which is great, and we are on the family plan of our twin here, so it is very reasonable for us. Carol supports a cell phone for one of our granddaugters, and she lives with it! Carol also buys minutes and unlimited texting for our other granddaughter, the sister who does not live with us, and that is important to here. We don't have land line telephone, so the cell phone is our only phone. It is great except we only have reception here in the house, and from here to the mailbox. We have about 12 miles from here to town with no reception, but we are fine with that. When we needed reception badly we got reception for one call to our daughter to come bail us out of trouble. It was like God helped us to have reception for that one call, because I couldn't get reception to make any more calls. I even climbed on top of a haystack rock, and that didn't help, but I had made the necessary call.
