every summer my parents would take us camping at a beach on the atlantic ocean. one summer when i was 5 years of age , i met my first "girlfriend" at the beach. we became friends and soon we were "playing make-believe"... playing and pretending we are husband and wife. we had fun playing together all afternoon... until the sun went down and our parents came and took us... it didn't hurt my feelings, though, because we were still friends when our parents took us away.... it was okay because, in my imagination, we were still married, and i thought someday we would meet again as grown-ups and be married for real ...

my next "girlfriend" was the first "girlfriend" who hurt my feelings. it happened when i was 6 years of age and in the first grade at school. her name was anne. i thought she was cute. i wanted her to be my girlfriend because she was so cute .... so the next time my mom took me to go shopping at the grocery store, i put a coin in one of the "gumball" machines, the "gumball machine" that had "finger" rings as prizes. the next day at school, i gave anne my ring, she put it on her finger and we walked through the halls of the school hand-in-hand together. i was "on cloud nine" (kinikilig?) all week and when we said "good-bye" on friday afternoon i was feeling happy . on monday morning when school opened again for classes, i looked for my "girlfriend" with eager anticipation so we could hold hands again and walk together in the hallway of the school. but when i finally saw her, my heart "dropped".... she was walking in the hallway hand-in-hand with a different boy... and she was wearing a different, bigger ring (instead of the ring i gave her). it hurt my feelings and i learned a sad lesson that day. at the age of 6 years (only 6 years of age ), i learned that there are some girls in this world who will leave you if they find a boy who will give them a bigger, more expensive ring... ... some friends have told me this is probably the reason why i never wear jewelry ... (no rings, no chains, not even a wristwatch ... maybe they are correct) .... i do think it is a reason why, in my heart, "gifts" aren't very important to me... and, of the "5 love languages", expressing love through"gifts" is the least important to me ...
