ACK! Our Kids Walked In On Us

It's happened to one in three REDBOOK readers: Your wide-eyed child is an accidental witness to some real live parent porn. Scarred for life? Nah.

By Lauren Bradshaw

It's not your children you necessarily need to worry about when they stumble upon you, naked in action. You're the one who's likely most traumatized! "Your kids will be fine," says Amy Levine, a certified sexuality educator in New York City. "In fact, it's healthy for children to know their parents are in love." So if the walk-in happens to you, just put on your big-girl pants (or any pants, really) and feel free to talk straight with your child: "Generally, all they need are basic answers in terms they can relate to," Levine says. "Some young children may be satisfied if you explain it by saying, 'Mommies and daddies show their love by kissing and lying close to each other.' Some older children may be ready for more details." But for now, just sit back, read and laugh: These women's stories will certainly make you feel better about your own coitus interruptus-es - or at the very least, remind you to lock your door tonight!

"We thought we got lucky one night when our two kids went to bed early, but 10 minutes later, while we were 'celebrating,' our 5-year-old daughter burst through the door, scared about an owl hooting outside her window. (For the record, it was an actual owl - not us.) My husband jumped up and ran to the bathroom in embarrassment, and I told her we were having a tickle fight. 'Why are you having a tickle fight without your jammies on?' she asked. I replied, 'Because it tickles more without our jammies!'" - DAWN CULLO, 38, RANCHO CORDOVA, CA

"My husband and I were on vacation in Palm Springs with our two sons, then 8 and 10. After a few glasses of wine one night, we popped the kids in front of a movie, shut the door to our adjoining room, and started fooling around. The sex was so good - vacation sex always is - and we were really going for it. Well, apparently, my younger son walked in - we didn't notice - and then ran back to tell his brother, who came in next to check it out. It must have been a pretty shocking scene: It was hot, so we were outside of the covers, fully exposed. I got dressed and walked into their room, where they were giggling and pretending to watch TV. Finally, my older son said, 'I'll never get that image out of my head.' I was so mortified! I told them that I knew we were all embarrassed, and after a few minutes we were able to laugh it off. Now our boys are 20 and 22 years old, and they tease us about it to this day. I jokingly tell them, 'Well, at least you saw your mom and dad at our best!'" - LORI BERGER, 49, LOS ANGELES

Parents, invest in door locks for yourselves and earplugs/muffs for the children.
Wasn't that just "Sooooo sweet!" Kid walks in on sex between momma and daddy and is told that it was a tickle party. The best advice is to be aware of what's happening around you and especially where the kids are. I'm 70, was married for 36 years before the wife died and we had four kids. Paint me sexually uptight but I think certain very personal things ought to be handled with a high level of class.

So far I've been lucky when they're in bed that's usually it , Thank GOD they sleep all night .

When I was in elementary school one of my friends told me that he was witness to the conception of his little brother! :o :o :o :o

Well, I must be very careful if in case i would be having intimate with my husband in the future. No disturbance, and all I can find is him. Remember, that moment of life is the most wonderful thing that would happen in life, so make sure to be very special and no other interference.

Yes, it is important to be careful that there would be no disturbance or interference. We have been lucky enough never to have gotten caught in those kinds of activities. But, not that the kids didn't know what was going on at times. They are good little detectives. I guess they pretended not to know what was happening. It has always been something that we have been cautious about. Carol's cousin told us that he went to visit his grandmother and his great uncle who were married. This was a second marriage for his grandmother. He was promptly told that they were busy, and go on and come back later. He said that he didn't have it figured out at the time what they were doing, but he figured it out later. That could be terribly embarrassing; like parents shouldn't do that!

I would like to categorized this topic as for adults only.
I agree on the first paragraph that Sir Ed posted above. It happened to us once but good thing our child was one year old then. So yes locked the door always. It is hard to find time doing some intimate moments during day time when you have toddlers. They often knock on door because they need you to help them out about something. So mostly daytimes are quickies and night times are great times. :D

You are correct, Red, in that this should be a conversation for adults only. Toddlers are so innocent, and they hardly know what is going on, but the older ones might know a lot more than we wish they did, and they pretend that they didn't hear anything or see anything, but they are going, "hehehehehehe" among themselves when we are not hearing what they are saying. Then with that there is considerably more embarrassment. But you know what? For them to know what is happening, what the couples are doing shouldn't be a big surprise, because after they get to be a certain age, they probably know how they got into this world, and so they probably know what their parents/adults are doing!      :D :D :D You are right, Red, the quickies are not nearly so much fun as taking your time and enjoying every minute of it! :D :D :D :D

It would be more embarrassing if they would tell somebody what they saw. That is why extra careful on conversations and actions when there are kids around. If not appropriate for kids then don't do it at their presence.

That is very true, Red. When we were little there was a family, the members of which attended our church. We were all in elementary, and these 2 boys from this one family were telling all their elementary friends at school what their Mom and Dad were doing in their bedroom. They told us that they saw the whole thing! How embarrassing!    :D :D
