Usually if an employee stands up to an abusive customer they can get into a lot of trouble. When I see someone who is not in a position to defend him/herself being bullied I usually do something to humiliate the bully. It can actually help break the tension for the staff and what the heck, bullies need an attitude adjustment anyway.
Recently I was at the bank when a customer was demanding to have the manager deal with his account rather than the employee whose job it was to deal with him. He was told that the manager was with another client and would not be available without an appointment he blew right up,called the employee a stupid whore and started screaming at her saying that she didn't know who she was dealing with. In a voice just loud enough to be heard by all I said "Gee, I sure hope he tells us all how important he is,maybe we can get autographs." several people sort of laughed and the guy seemed to lose all his steam.
Another time a very loud woman was demanding the impossible from an employee at Home Depot, when the employee told her that what she demanded would not be possible she shouted "I've never been so insulted in my entire life" all I said was " Take a look at yourself, you must have been" Worked like a charm.
