This is written to inform the public about the benefit of Egyptian Spinach or what we call "Saluyot". Saluyot is a leafy vegetable that grows during rainy days. Look at your surroundings at home, saluyot grows anywhere as long as the soil contains moist or watery. It would sometimes mistaken as weeds or grass and is taken for granted. But then, this green leafy vegetable is nutritious and has health benefits.

About this, Saluyot is a kind of plant that grows from one foot to a meter or two. It has small leaves and hard stem around one half inch circumference. Due to its pest resistant, it does not need a lot of care. Its leaves are about one by two inches accross the leaves and it is rough to touch its surface. The flower is colored yellow and is such a small flower like two cm wide with three petals.

This kind of vegetable is cooked as stew or boil in water. Usually, this is added to some kind of starchy vegetables such as squash and potato. When cooked, it creates slimy thick syrup like cooking okra. I used to add shrimp on my dish with saluyot couple with okra, eggplant, string beans, lutya and squash. Some people like the taste and some does not but for me, I like the taste as I use to eat this.

Okay, what saluyot can do to our health? Yes, it has health benefits. Since it is consider as herbal medicine, it is rich in vitamin A which is good for eyesight. Vitamin A plays great role in maintaining healthy vision and healthy youthful skin. It creates or promote youthful skin due to its anti-oxidant property that slows aging while prevent wrinkles. More than that vitamin A is responsible for building strong bones.

For those who have suffered arthritis, headache, problem on bowel movement, so with hearth problem, saluyot is a good food to eat. It treats inflammation and pain as it fights radical damage thus treats arthritis. Because it is rich in fiber, it helps control blood pressure, cholesterol build-up and diabetes and heart disease. The slimy taste when cooked is used to treat various digestive problems such as diarrhea, stomach ache, dysentery, constipation, and ulcer.

Saluyot is one of the ingredients of food being sold in the market right now. In fact, it is one of the ingredients added to corn coffee. For more information, an A Natural coffee is an herbal corn coffee with saluyot. At first taste of this corn coffee it taste different and slippery in the mouth. It taste good when super hot to drink while luke warm water added to this is not good. Just my experience. That is why I prefer to drink this rather than pure coffee or 3 in 1 coffee being sold in the market. Why? Because of its benefit.

To summarize, saluyot is good for those who has health problems like high blood, joint problems, arthritis, headache, stomach ache, kidney stones, anti-aging, low energy, high cholesterol, diabetes, constipation, ulcer and hearth problem.

Do you find this amazing what saluyot can do to our health!?! I urge someone up there to find and add this in daily intake in our diet because it is good for you. It is not only healthy but also thrifty in our pocket.

Lastly, saluyot claimed that combine with other herbs, it can cure cancer.

Happy eating saluyot!

This is written to inform the public about the benefit of “Tanglad”. Tanglad is common plant in the Philippines. Most Filipinos in the barrio plant this kind of plant due to its usefulness and many benefits.

Tanglad is can be planted any time in the Philippines. It is easily grown in tropical countries. I have planted one a clump of tanglad last year in November. And now I have so many tanglad at home which can be used for cooking especially meat and fish with soup. Most of the time when I cook for lunch, I used to boil water and put tanglad around 2-3 pieces being tied together like our long hair being tangled with rubber bond. Usually, it would boil the water with tanglad around 5-10 minutes to make sure the aroma from tanglad is smelled and the citrus flavor with ginger savor is tasted. I believe, majority of Filipino is using tanglad in their soup. It has a sweet smell and lemony with dark yellow color on the soup.

Since Filipino loves lechon pig (roast pig), tanglad is being used and is put inside the stomach of the lechon when ready to cook. This helps eliminate the bad odor of the port, and make the meat lechon taste even better. This also be done on lechon chicken (roast chicken) even lechon cow (roast cow). Has anyone tried this? If not, then give a try and see how it taste better and smell so good.

I have planted that tanglad at home due to lots of mosquitoes. Tanglad helps get rid away of the mosquitoes at home. Maybe, this is due to its scent that is not good for the insects. It seems that tanglad scent becomes insecticide. I would recommend everyone to plant tanglad and who knows, we can throw away mosquitoes and other insects that cause dengue, which is deadly and has no cure for now. Also, it has been discovered that tanglad scent is snake repellant. Wow, that is really remarkable!

My mother has a pigpen and raises 7 pigs at home, and the odor of its waste is so horrible. Because of this tanglad plant helps eliminate the odor. Plants absorbs carbon dioxide and we breath oxygen from plants. Just in case you have animals at home, it is good to plant tanglad because it helps eliminate the odor from animal wastes.

Also, tanglad has health benefits. It is good for those who has problems in their stomach such as gastrointestinal problems, diarrhea, as also those who has flu and headaches. So much to that, tanglad juice can treat colds and rheumatism. In fact, it has been reported that tanglad can cure cancer, too.
At home, I boil water in a big container for about 6 liters of water and add tanglad about 10 pieces or a crump with at least 5 pieces of stem. Boil it around 30 to 45 minutes. After that, let it cool down. After that, add lemon juice around half a kilo. Then, put it is a refrigerator and make it as your drink for the whole day or two. Healthy drinking tanglad juice! Oh by the way, you can sell it too. A bottle of 250ml would cost 25 pesos. You wont just get healthy, but increase income, too!.

Green Beans
Green beans are common vegetable in the Philippines. There is what we call string beans, Baguio beans, green peas and a lot more. It is easily grown especially the soil over the county is fertile and this plant is suitable in terms of weather condition. Mostly, it is planted during rainy days. I remember when my late father planted string beans along the farm or on the dike of the rice field. It takes 3 months until it is ready to be harvested. It is not necessarily to put some chemicals or fertilizer as long as it is maintained to clear out the weeds from your garden.
In rural areas, vegetable is one of the sources of income. Due to rich soil, planting is one recommended to make a living. Just plant once and leave it there until it is ready to be harvested. It need not a lot of care however weeds or wild plant need to cut it off. During season, a kilo or 2.2 pounds of beans cost 30-50 pesos per kilo and would reach to a hundred of kilo during non season. The good thing is that, after the first harvest, water your beans with water with soap or detergent or water from your laundry and it will flower again and more fruits to be harvested soon. I used to do that when I planted “sitaw’ or what we call beans.
Consuming vegetables of all kind has been associated to reduced many adverse health condition associated with it. It has been studied and found out that increasing intake of green beans decreases the risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes and gives long life while it promotes good and healthy skin, increased energy and lower weight.

Way back to our science subject at elementary, we know that plants contain a lot of chlorophyll, which is responsible to block the carcinogenic effects when meat is being grilled in high temperature. I used to grill meat or fish at home, and that brown or dark colored formed on the surface of meat or fish is carcinogenic, which means can cause cancer. That is why when someone is used to eat grilled meat, it is recommended to pair with green vegetables to decrease the risk of getting cancer from it.

Consuming more iron from vegetables especially green beans promotes fertility. I have noticed that my sister in law has taken more folic acid when she was pregnant and that is needed for pregnant women. This folic acid protects the infants against any nerve or nervous system related problems. Eating green beans a cup or two a day provides folic acid needed by those who are pregnant. Studies shows that eating a lot of beans can also help with depression. It will regulate mood, sleep and even our appetite.

More to that, beans is rich in vitamin K. This vitamin improves bone health, and helps or improves calcium absorption, reducing urinary excretion of calcium.

I hope that this information would help us to be more cautious of what we are eating. As to the saying goes, “What we eat is what we are”. Happy healthy eating green beans!
