If you tell your partner your dark secret and it wrecks that relationship, it is for the best and indicates the relationship was not strong enough in the first place. If it comes out in the future it will only bring misery. If your partner accepts what has happened is in the past, you should be on your way to a strong enduring relationship.

Yes - this is not gender specific - if the situation is reversed and the girl hurts the guy, the guy can still have strong feelings for the girl. Sometimes the love was so strong the rejected person is unable to have a relationship with anybody else and it impacts the rest of their life. Unfortunately that strong love can also turn to hate in the person who was rejected and that is very destructive. Finding your soulmate can be tough, it is easy to say do not dwell on the past, but it is difficult to do that when you have had strong feelings for somebody.
