In Praise of Bacolod

Postby Chas » Fri Mar 19, 2010 8:13 am

Excluding arrival and departure days, I spent three days in Bacolod and the surrounding area. From Sagay in the north to La Carlota to the south. Given the short visit this has to be a very superficial view.

I liked the area a lot. It was very clean with far less litter than you would find on the streets of London. The mountains down the centre of Negros seemed to trap the clouds so you got constant sunshine, unlike Cebu where it often clouded over in the afternoon. The people seemed very friendly and I got shouts of 'Hi Joe' and smiles which were rare in Cebu. It felt more relaxed than Cebu and certainly I felt safe wandering the streets.

I stayed at the Sylvia Manor Hotel, the cheapest and best hotel I stayed at during my whole stay in the Philippines. The staff were amazing, the chef a genius. The one blot was excessive noise from outside because of badly fitting windows. Despite that I would willingly stay there again.

SM Mall was smaller than I expected, but had a reasonable range of shops, banks and one supermarket. The City Museum was interesting and worth the visit.

Apart from the Hotel, I ate at Trattoria Uma: good Italian food and a nice house red wine; and at a Chinese restaurant called Dao's or Pao's which was tasty and very very good value. Aboys was also recommended to me, but I never got there.

Anybody on the Forum live in or been to Bacolod and have an opinion on it? I am certainly looking forward to going back. It was easy to get to, just a short hop by air from Cebu.

I haven`t gone to Bacolod yet, Mr. Chas. But as I read on your post, I feel that happiness and the contentment of your visit here in the Philippines particularly in Bacolod. Thank you for the nice compliments that you have posted about our country. :P
