I did not think the Philippines was self sufficient in rice. I guess the short term impact would be to put up the price of rice which would benefit the rice farmers, but the poor would suffer and starve. What would they eat instead of rice? El Nino may make your suggestion come true through a shortage of rice on the world market.

Base on the first state of the nation address or SONA last week of July (if i am not mistaken) of the new elected President Noynoy Aquino, only 6% of the total annual budget is of the Philippines is left. That means 94% of the annual budget is being spent by the previous administration. So how can the new president budget the 6% for the remaining 5 months since. Accordingly, he is trying to have life style to those government officials who has been given midnight appointment by the previous president.Do you believe that this present administration, corruption in the country will be stop if not lesson the possibility among government officials? How about drug addiction? Can there be possibility that unemployment in the country be decrease as one of the top priority of the new administration?

i guess the government will subsidize the oil price because all comodities are getting high prices and the wages are always low.

Our gasoline for the 92 premium is $3.99 a gallon which is as close as you can get to $4.00 a gallon. It was actually higher than that for a short time a few years ago. Groceries cost more now than before. You are right, Crisi, everything goes up except not always wages. I think part of the problem in our country, and affecting world wide economics is the high wages. When I was a really young guy I was into farming/ranching for a while on our family farm. There was a time that anything that had metal in it doubled and tripled in price. Suddenly people had to have more money from their produce, like cows and crops to break even or make a profit. Then increasing wages followed closely behind. As wages increased everything else increased, so we really didn't get ahead. They we couldn't sell our products to foreign countries for the same amount of money, and that made it hard on those foreign countries. The minimum wage here is around 8 or 9 dollars an hour; I have lost track because I am not collecting hourly wages. We were better off when we were only making 2 dollars an hour, because everything else was reasonable too. In fact we may now have less money making 9 dollars an hour than we had when we were making 2 dollars an hour.

Yes, it is very sad that import prices have to be so high, when I think it is just an economic game that has some very bad effects for everyone. As I said in the other post, we don't need $9.00 an hour for our labor if we can buy other things reasonably. But because we have those high wages, and expensive costs, we feel that we have to have a high price for our produce, and that makes it difficult for other countries to buy that produce. Theoretically it shouldn't cost more to produce rice in one country than the other. I know it does, but it shouldn't. Wages and expenses should all be the same, then we could trade with each other more easily. :) :) :) :)
