The first day of winter

Postby Smiley » Tue Dec 22, 2015 10:57 am

Winter officially began last night. It's still pretty mild here,as I write this I have 2 windows open. That is not the usual routine for winter in Canada.Tomorrow temps will peak in the low 60's. I'm ready for spring ;) . I have to head out soon and will put on a light jacket, usually it is a parka this time of year.

Hmmmm...I was curious how cold it was in Egypt, so I looked online, and the temperatures shown are what we would consider as Fall or Spring-like temperatures, in Texas, and not winter. I would suggest that Smiley knows what a real winter is like more than most of us. it gets freezing or below only a handful of times here in Central Texas, but up in Canada, it may not get above freezing for weeks at a time during the winter...plus lots of snow and ice.
Consider yourself lucky, lyrehc...it could be a lot colder! 8-)

In my area we are having an unnaturally warm season.I slept with a window open last night.I live in the southernmost city in Canada,We are actually south of Detroit due to the path of the river that acts as our border,
In the past I have lived in the far north where I experienced extremely hostile temperatures.Believe me,anything colder than 40'below is no joke.People die. Actually,to me anything colder that beach weather is too darn cold ;) . I don't miss being up north at all, here a long winter is 4 months,a short one 3.
I once had a friend in the Philippines jokingly tell me that Canada had 4 seasons while the Phils only had 2,summer and typhoon. I corrected him that Canada only had 3 seasons. Last ^@*! winter, This^@*! winter, and Next^@*! winter!

A lot milder than usual here as well. First time I have had to cut the grass in December. Lyrehc, to us you are not experiencing cold there, but as always it is relative to what you are used to. Dry cold is nicer than wet cold weather.

I have experienced 6C at night up high in mountain province in the Philippines in January. Due to be 5C here tonight so maybe winter is on the way. The central heating is keeping us nice and warm and a bottle of Spanish Rioja is adding to the glow :D

Happy Christmas all.

I'm pretty sure the average Philipina turns blue at about 4'C ;) I know that the older I get the less I like winter.and I started off not liking it much. It's been all downhill since I was 5.

Thank you Smiley. The bad weather hit the Dallas, Texas area on Saturday night. There was an F4 tornado on the ground. Last I heard, there were 12 killed, many of whom were traveling by car on Interstate Hwy 30 in Garland, a suburb of Dallas. I read that more than 1400 homes were destroyed in that storm. It is rare to have tornadoes in December, but El Nino weather has caused warmer than normal temperatures in the US. Austin is about 220 miles South of Dallas, so I was never in any danger from that storm. We had our 2nd wettest year ever recorded for Central Texas for 2015.
Today the Mississippi River is flooding In St Louis, Missouri. That is 1300 km from here, so they are getting record rainfalls all over the US. I just heard that the flooding in and around St Louis has already killed 20.
El Nino is affecting weather in many countries bordering the Pacific Ocean. Many farmers in the Philippines are struggling with no rice crops because of lack of rain. So it is having the opposite effect on the Philippines than it is having on the US.

And that is why I live in the Southern part of the US. We have such mild weather so far this winter. It may get close to freezing at night, but the daytime temperatures are like Springtime....very warm. Today we hit 28 degrees Celsius, or 83 degrees Fahrenheit. It supposed to stay warm here for the next 2 weeks, and then we may not see any more cold weather. It is okay with me because I hate the cold.
Stay warm if you can, Smiley, and know that most of us do not envy your environment this time of the year.
