Memorial Day

Postby Edwin » Mon May 30, 2011 7:21 pm

This is Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is actually today, but whatever the day is everyone usually observes the entire weekend. Since I was a little boy we always gathered at my grandmother's house for a potluck dinner which was a lot of fun. We got to eat a lot of food and desert. Then we would go to the cemetary to visit the graves of our departed loved ones. Mom would grow flag flowers just for the purpose of putting flowers on the graves.

When my grandmother died in 1964 we stopped doing that for a short time. Then some of my cousins started it up again, and we would gather at one of their houses, or gather at the park sometimes. Then it rained so many times on that day that our relatives started renting various buildings for its observance. We have been renting the Grange Hall for a number of years, and one of my cousins really pushed it, making it as successful as it was when my grandmother was alive. Then a few years ago my cousins started inviting the children and grandchildren of my grandmother's identical twin sister. Then that cousin died who did so much to promote our family gathering. After that a cousin from my grandmother's identical twin sister took it upon herself to promote our gatherings, and now we have about as many from that side of the family as we do from our side of the family, and it is really nice.

After the dinner we went to the cemetary, and visited the graves our our departed loved ones, and that was very good. We have not been going regularly each year, so we had to do some hunting to find some of the graves, but we found them all. Then we came home, did more visiting, and after that I walked my big dog Scooby for 2 hours, almost running into the darkness! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
