Thanks for the pictures, Crisi, and that was a great opportunity with the kids! The kids having that knowledge, and having those fire extinguishers is a great help for everyone.
Where we lived and worked for 10 years in the National Park, it was usually my job to gather fire extinguishers from everywhere, all the hotel rooms, restaurant, shop, laundry area, buses, you name it, about 50 or so, more or less. I would bring them to a centralized location, like outside the restaurant, and then fire extinguisher experts would come test them, okay them, or replace them. It was part of a governmental requirement to have the extinguishers tested, and make sure they were at their proper locations. We had lots of other fire safety rules, and we had Park Services inspectors that came through inspecting for infractions, and fire safety problems. The inspections usually turned out well, but occasionally we did have problems that had to be addressed.
One time in the 10 years we were there we actually had a pretty good fire started. The last 2 years we worked there the owners set up a commercial washer and dryer to do their own laundry which before that we sent down lake on a boat to another town to have that laundry done. Anyway the last 2 years the place we worked for did our own bed sheets, towels, wash clothes, you name it, whatever was used in the hotel rooms. Well, my wife, Carol, was in charge of doing that laundry the last 2 years. The dryer wash propane operated, and she left a load of wet towels, sheets, and so on, in the dryer, with it running while we went to meet the boat with all the people coming from the outside world. The only way to get there was with a boat or an airplane. Anyway while we were all gone to meet the boat, she collected the money from people going on the bus tours that I drove. While most everyone was meeting the boat, the lint in the dryer caught fire. About all that burned was the sheets, pillow cases, towels, wash clothes and so on that were drying. The people on fire control with the Park Service did more damage than the fire, and the fire was confined to the dryer, but they over reacted, chopped holes in the building, shot water everywhere, causing some water damage. After it was over a number of repairs were necessary, but at least the building did not burn, and we were living right above that in a 3 story A Frame building, so we were thankful that our house did not burn with all of our things in it. After that before Carol went to the boat, she would turn that dryer off, and not leave it running while gone to the boat.
