I Timothy 4:8; "For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."
I Corinthians 8:26; "I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27; But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest by any meanse. when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."
The first scripture has been used for an excuse to lay around and not do anything. What it is actually saying is that bodily exercise is profitable for a little while, or as long as this life lasts, and that is important. Also there is a little profit, but more importantly the profit lasts as long as we live. It is important to eat correctly and exercise for our health, and so that we can live a longer and more healthy life, which is what God wants. The point that Paul is making is that in comparison godliness profits in all things, far reaching, and godliness has profit for this life and for our eternal life. So if there is a choice godliness is the better choice, because how we prepare for eternity is the most important.
In the other scripture Paul is basically saying do something real and vital, but don't just beat the air. When you train hit the bag with your punches as that will get you further than punching the air. When Paul runs for exercise he really runs, not running with uncertainty. He also talks about keeping his body under and bringing it into subjection, or in other words doing what is necessary for the body. Then he is also talking about living right, so that he doesn't tell other people how to live and then fails to live correctly himself. Paul is allluding to diet and exercise, and then he is comparing that to his spiritual life.
I read on MSN news about diet and exercise. I liked the article but it is too lengthy to put here, unless someone wants to see it. I have saved it on my computer under my documents. The article talks about eating and exercising myths, or false ideas. The article was very sound and it supported everything that I have learned in 2 nutrition classes that I have taken over the years. One idea people have is that they should keep their heart rate lower while exercising because that is the ideal fat burning place. It is tru that more fat is burned than carbs at lower intensity, but higher intensity does result in more fat over all burned because more calories are burned. Fewer calories taken in by eating and more burned with exercise translates into more weight loss and more fat burned. So if you want to lose weight and fat, higher intensity is better even thought you will be burning carohydrates as well as fat. Carb burning is necessary in order to do the job. The article also promoted running, but I am not going to run or jog as I think it might be hard on my joints. Our neighbor who is a lot younger than I am told me that he usd to jog past our place before we lived here. He told me that the jogging caused him to have knee problems. Someone else told me that jogging caused a person they knew to have stress fractures in this guys vertebraes, so I won'd be running or jogging. My cellar digging would have helped me this summer, but from my internal bleeding, prostate biopsy, and thinking I was going to need surgery caused me to stop digging on my cellar, and I lost a lot of great exercise I was planning on having, but that is okay, and God knows what is happening, and he loves me and all of you also, and as soon as my back recovers from moving stuff around in the house I will be back to digging, probably next week. The doctor didn't tell me to avod any activity, so I am going to go for it.
Also don't limit the types of foods you eat, as you need them all. You need fats and carbohydrates, but just limit the total Calorie intake and get more exercise. Don't try to lose weight rapidly. If you are losing more than 1/2 to 2 pounds each week you are losing muscle, and that is harming your body. They also say that you shouldn't over eat on some days, because over eating on the weekend can ruin 5 days of your eating correctly. Also they say that it is good to allow yourself to eat a junk food once in a while rather than being so strick that you get extreme cravings, and then give up the good efforts. Of course eat the whole grains, the fruits and the vegetables, the good fats, and multitude of other great foods, avoiding white refined flour and sugar. Eat less, smaller portions, 3 good meals each day, and exercise more, but don't hurt your body with extreme exercising in the meantime! Drink lots of water especially before meals or exercising times, but don't drink too much water as that can be harmful too, and even fatal.
Eat good, exercise more, and have fun, which is very important too!
